M:SOUNDTRACK presents ♥ : THURSDAY 18.03.2010 @ 9 p.m. in Schokoladen CEDARWELL (US) + AMPL:TUDE (BLN)
CEDARWELL // If you like Bon Iver, Wisconsin, and beards, you need to check out Cedarwell. Cedarwell’s Erik Neave well embodies his northern heritage. Sheboygan, Wisconsin, should be proud of such a wonderfully full beard, such tough flannel shirts and darkly twisted, acoustic-pop songs that seem to ride nature’s very rhythm. Crisp clarity and addictive genuineness hibernate Neave’s voice somewhere in the back of your memory, somewhere where it can stay for a long, long time, constantly reminding you that this is Wisconsin, and winter never really ends. M:SOUNDTRACK presents ♥ : THURSDAY 25.03.2010 @ 9 p.m. in Schokoladen with LAKE (US, K records) + Mixtapes & Cellmates (Swe)
LAKE // is a group of cloudy individuals brought together through lines drawn along Interstate-5, intersecting in olympia on or around 2005. Since forming, they have both gained and lost members, recorded 12 full length albums (only 3 of which have seen proper release), played across the world supporting such talented acts as Adrian Orange and Her Band, Half Handed Cloud, Laura Veirs, and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. The sounds they craft are straight from the playbook of the good parts of Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, and Turkish psychedelic music. Caressing the Rhodes piano, endearing drum fills, guitars that dont sound like guitars, and some slamming bass lines: Listening to LAKE is like pouring sugar in your ears. They’ll turn your brain into chocolate, 67% cacao.
Lake´s music takes all of the K records folk-pop sound direction it´s listeners have to come to love, but pushes it in a more lush and almost orchestral direction. Sweet soft melodies sweep over warm layered vocals to keep the listener interwined while wonderfully upredictable hooks round out their compositions. Lake provides the perfect soundtrack to to keep their listeners warm throughout winter.LISTEN:: www.myspace.com/lakemusicmusic
M:SOUNDTRACK presents ♥ : THURSDAY 01.04.2010 @ 9 p.m. in Schokoladen:: CJ BOYD (US) + PETER NEVINS (NYC) + JOE WILLIAMSON and the Inconvience (Swe)
CJ BOYD // Equal parts ambient and virtuosic, melancholic and playful, CJ Boyd’s bass playing melts glaciers, creating a sea of low, flowing rhythms, while also supplying melodies that soar over the ocean to dizzy the sun in its path. Waves of bass loops are garnished with harmonica drones and constant improvisational exploration. Deep-sea-diving for the hungry and alone. While certainly following in the footstep of great bassists like Mingus and Meyer, Boyd’s aesthetic sensibility also seeks to wed the minimalism of Reich and Riley with what might be called the maximalism of Beethoven’s chamber music. Add some Moondog, Authur Russell, Godspeed, Eluvium. But with the improvisational prowess culled from jazz. Not a “bassplayer” in the usual sense of the word. But something refreshing and impressive—with fingers that only know how to dance to the deepest tunes. LISTEN:: www.myspace.com/cjboyd
PETER NEVINS // Part modern psychedelic minstrel, and part ancient folk troubadour, Peter Nevins hails from Northern California, but now, after 3 years in NYC, lives in Montréal, Canada. He plays the 8-string bouzouki, with magic audio sauce applied, accompanying himself on vocals. He might appeal to fans of the initial psych-folk movement of the mid 60’s to early 70’s as well as those of contemporaries Mary Hampton, Espers, Devendra Banhart, and Sufjan Stevens, among others. LISTEN:: www.myspace.com/peternevins JOE WILLIAMSON and the Inconvienience // Songs about love, war alien abduction and good intentions. Played by Stockholm based Canadian Joe Williamson on bass and vocals, and the Inconvienience (Rico Repotente – guitar, Christoph Cantillo – drums) including the upcoming smash hits “Freaks on Te Beach” “Rumsfeld Weekend” and “Dog Lovers Love Dogs”. The album “Everything should have been just fine” was released 2009 on JEDSO RECORDS. LISTEN:: http://www.myspace.com/joewilliamson
M:SOUNDTRACK presents ♥ : THURSDAY 08.04.2010 @ 9 p.m. in Schokoladen BJÖRN KLEINHENZ (Swe) + The Gentle Act Incident (Swe) + Pink Moth (Can)
BJÖRN KLEINHENZ // lives on a desert island.
He sits in a very small room recording very small songs.
He stomps his big foot in the chalky Fårö ground and listens carefully. He claims nowadays to be a mountain.
Björn Kleinhenz’s fifth album is called B.U.R.M.A. and was released in September 2009. It is recorded by Björn alone on the island Fårö on the east coast of Sweden where he has lived since new year with his girlfriend and their rabbit Humle. It dispalys a new intimate sound with sparkling and fizzling arrangements intricate and tiny. Here are a few lines that have nothing to do with anything but are beautiful nonetheless:
I am a mountain now
I am the sea and sky
I am a puff of smoke
coming through your window
I am a sundown queen
You are my everything
And no matter what Carson said
We hunt in pairs!
GENTLE ACT INCIDENT // The melancholic indie rock band from Gothenburg, Sweden, recently released their first album, ”like silk burns”. They have played with bands such Shout out louds and Tocotronic and have toured Europe 4 times. With their new album GENTLE ACT INCIDENT are taking the lead in a new wave of indierock. For this tour the band consists of 6 persons presenting a big atmospheric well-set, but organic sound.
Quote from American blogsite, ”It’s a trap, tries to draw a reference: ” As for the emo-pop side of this, I hold all comers up to Jimmy Eat World’s “Bleed American”, a perfect example of emotional hardcore/pop music, and The Gentle Act Incident definitely swims in similar waters.” LISTEN:: http://www.myspace.com/gentleactincident
PINK MOTH // is a new project centered around its main creative force, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist RAY CAMMAERT. After years of touring and making critically acclaimed records as a key member of Maps of the Night Sky, new material written in solitude indicated a different approach was necessary. The result is an intimate and honest presentation of the evolution of a songwriter and his craft. Recorded at the band’s own Tinshop Studios and mixed by Andy Magoffin (Great Lake Swimmers, Constantines, Jim Guthrie) at his House of Miracles studio, this collection of songs is a melancholic, minimalist affair. Tempos shift and dynamics play beneath a dark, stream-of-concious narrative, ever-expansive in it’s imagery and breadth, but it is the deft use of saw, organ, french horn, and violin that give these defiant hymnals their eerie, twilight quality. M:SOUNDTRACK presents ♥ : THURSDAY 22.04.2010 @ 9 p.m. in Schokoladen :: LITTLE TEETH (US) + PHOEBE KREUTZ (US)
LITTLE TEETH // may only be made up of three people but their brigades have the might of thirty. They exude a Bohemian-pop playfulness in their songs that is totally off-beat and skewed far from mainstream. Little Teeth is the union of three strange souls whose mystical convergence has bred their only faith.
Their very original music is Folk as an art form played with a conviction of sensibility and spirit. Their all out abandon of song structure focuses on experimentation, strange but beguiling harmonies and escalating emphasis of drumming, cello, banjo, mandolin, any of a number of home-made instruments, or Dannie’s wildcat snarl. She’s got one of those once-in-a-lifetime voices, a collision of pain and triumph, of sounds that tickle and caress the ear and blurts and barks that frighten it. But what is most mesmerizing about the band is their transcendent synergy on stage. All three members of the band have a unique charisma, a comforting strangeness and eccentricity unique to each of them and totally captivating together. During their live performance, they pluck, bow, stomp and wail with leviathan attitude, fierce heart, and painful emotion. Their lyrics, personal and devastatingly honest, combined with the disjointed sampling of sounds, creates music that is commanding, emotionally conflicted and utterly moving. LISTEN:: http://www.myspace.com/littleteethmusic
PHOEBE KREUTZ // is a boozy floozy with a heart of gold. She sings silly songs about the things she likes best: boys and bars and vikings and tacos.
Growing up in New York’s East Village, Phoebe learned a lot about all these things. She also learned a lot about rhyming from Dr. Seuss and the joys of thinly-veiled social commentary from “He-Man” and “The Smurfs”. Now she’s all grown up and still loving life in the big city. She gets to sing in all kinds of fun places like The Knitting Factory, Fez, Birdland and The Sidewalk Café. It was there that she found the jolly antifolk scene, which has nurtured and indulged her like a benevolent uncle these past few years. It was also there that she met the boys who would later join with her to become the world’s greatest art-indie-rock band that only sings about animals in the city, Urban Barnyard. LISTEN: www.myspace.com/phoebekreutz
„It has been said that Phoebe Kreutz sings like a lovechild of Joan Baez and Weird Al Yankovic. To me, she sounds like a female version of Adam Sandler, only more focused on the quality of her music than that renowned comedian-turned-songwriter. Working well within the Antifolk community, Kreutz also keeps true to her promise to never write about her feelings.”- THE STANFORD DAILY
